Workshop: Search Engine Optimisation: The Inside Story

Craig Nevill-Manning, Google’s Manhattan-based Director of Engineering and member of the team that leads the development of Google’s search products, will guide you through the inside story of search engines and will explore how to gain the best search engine rankings for your and your clients’ sites.

When and Where

This workshop will be held on Wednesday 15th September, 2pm to 4:30pm.

Objectives

At the end of the workshop delegates will understand how search engines work and how to ensure that website content and usability are optimised to maximise ranking and indexing.

Approach

Craig will guide participants through how search engines really work and why they work the way they do. The level of technical detail will depend on the audience.

Workshop Content

The workshop covers the following:

  • How Google and others crawl, index and rank websites
  • How to make sure your content is optimised for crawling and indexing
  • How to make sure your content ranks well for relevant queries
  • The role web site usability plays
  • Interactive analysis of specific websites suggested by participants

Trainer: Craig Nevill-Manning

Dr. Nevill-Manning graduated with a BSc in computer science from the University of Canterbury. He received his PhD from the University of Waikato where he worked on the Weka machine learning suite.

After a successful academic career, including Assistant Professor at Rutgers University and a post-doctoral fellow in the Biochemistry department at Stanford University, Craig joined Google in 2001 as a Senior Research Scientist.

Craig went on to found Google’s first remote engineering center, located in midtown Manhattan, where he is currently the Engineering Director. He has continued to be at the forefront of Google’s innovation, for example he invented the technology which drives Google’s Froogle, a ground-breaking product search engine.
